I distinctly remember a post that I made a year ago right after my boyfriend’s brother passed away unexpectedly and tragically in a car accident. I’m not exactly sure how a year passed since that happened, but I am constantly reminded of little things about Matthew, and thought today would be a great day to make a quick post – because I rarely ever post anymore – and maybe offer a little bit of advice to some people.
In my post from last year, I said we could all take a lesson from Matthew:
Today, I urge you to take a lesson from Matthew: Work hard, don’t sweat the small stuff, and never let anyone tell you you can’t do something.
I still urge you to do that. But…also…smile more. Every time I saw Matthew in the six months that I knew him, he always had a smile on his face. I know there were times when he didn’t, obviously, but that left such a big impact on me. This kid was always happy. He would tell a joke and you didn’t laugh, he’d think you were grumpy. Wanna know why?
Because he was GENUINELY happy.
What made him happy? I mean, I can’t say for certain because I wasn’t in his head, but lets be honest – it’s because he CHOSE to be happy. We all go through crappy times. We have work issues, family issues, other problems that arise at inopportune times. Things happen that we aren’t expecting and that makes us unhappy.
But…we can still choose happy.
Choose to smile despite the problems. You never know what your smile might do to encourage someone who’s having a bad day. If you can’t smile today, I hope someone smiles at YOU to encourage you that maybe tomorrow will be better.
So for today, I’m smiling despite the tears. I’m smiling because I know that Matthew is in Heaven worshiping Jesus. I’m smiling because I’m going to get to join him someday.
You’re never fully dressed without a smile.
