A Novel Idea: 8/16/14

A Novel Idea

This week’s A Novel Idea is about relationships!
I’m writing about Shae again!

  1. How do they treat those around them, in general? Are they nice, rude, reserved? Does their treatment of others depend on how well they know them?
Shae is very shy at first – mostly because she’s deaf and feels like people will judge her for that – so she doesn’t say much when she first meets someone. But she’s always nice about it. Once she knows someone, she really doesn’t shut up, though.
  2. Who is their best friend, or friends? Do they bring out the best in your character, or the worst? Are they a partner in crime, or a partner in good? 😉
Her ultra-best friend is Ky who she’s known since she was just a kid. When Ky finds out that Shae is moving to Texas, Ky tries to talk her into staying because she’s afraid their friendship will end.

  3. Have they ever been in love? If so, did it last, or was it just a fling?
No, she hasn’t been in love. In fact, she’s never even thought about being in love because it hurts too much. When her parents got divorce, her thoughts on love and marriage changed drastically. She figured if her parents – two of the best people she knew – couldn’t stay together, how could anyone?
  4. Who do they despise most?
When she moves to Texas she meets Trey McFadden, who turns into her worst enemy. They work together at a small restaurant, and don’t even kinda get along.

  6. Do they tend to argue with people, or avoid conflict altogether? If they avoid it, why?
If someone argues with Shae, she will stand her ground. She hates being told what to do by others, and hates when people try to shove their opinions down her throat.

A Novel Idea: 8/9/14

A Novel Idea

It’s really sad when the person who runs these linkups doesn’t, well, linkup! Decided I better do it. Right now.

Decided I should focus on a new character in one of my older novels. Shae and I have none each other since I was 17, and I started her story called A World Without Sound. Without sounding completely weird, I consider her one of my best friends, and I don’t know what I’d do without her.

Shae is deaf, and has been since a car accident made her that way when she was 11. She decided to learn how to read lips and do American Sign Language, both of which she is fluent in.

At the beginning of her story, her family is moving from Philly to Texas, and she’s packing her stuff to leave. She doesn’t have a lot to hold her in PA, but she’s still sad about leaving the home she’s been in since she was born.

Shae is 20, and has a twin brother named Cash.

(thanks to my friend, Hannah, for letting me use her picture for my portrayal of Shae Hartford!)

1.)What do they consider the most important thing they’ve done so far in their life?
Well, quite honestly, she feels like she hasn’t done much of anything important. She’s graduated high school, she got a job at the supermarket, but she feels kind-of like she hasn’t gone anywhere in her 20 year life.
2.) What is their greatest regret?
When her dad left when she was fifteen, Shae never got to talk to him before he left. She regrets not telling him how she felt when he walked away from his family.
3.) When was the last time they were really, really frightened?
As much as she doesn’t want to admit it, she is frightened to move to a place where she knows absolutely no one. Sure, her family is going with her, but the idea of having to make new friends really scares her. (She has always had trouble making friends – because people treat her differently…at least, some of them!)
3.) What was the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to them?
One time she fell asleep during a church service and didn’t realize she was snoring. Her twin brother, Cash, woke her up and told her she’d better not do that again.
5.) If they could change one thing about their past – and only one thing – what would that be and why?
She is used to being deaf, but she’d go back to the day of the car accident and stop it from happening. It’s the reason her father left, so she would still have him in her life…

A Tree House in the Backyard

A Novel Idea

This week’s questions are focused on their background!

  1. Where were they born? In a hospital, in their home, what city?
Hazel was born in a hospital in Pennsylvania (I’m not sure where yet, because I haven’t quite decided where she’s going to live. Bear with me!)
  2. Where do they live now?
She currently lives in PA with her parents and sisters, but her mom and dad are getting a divorce so she’s moving with her dad about an hour and a half away from her current home in acityimnotsurethenameofyet
  3. Who are the people they are closest to? Family, friends?
Hazel is closest to her Dad – in her family, but she also has a twin sister, Paige that she’s close to, as well. She has a couple friends at school, but none she’s “best friends” with. She’s really picky about who she spends her time with.
  4. Where do they go when they’re angry and need to get away?
At the house she’s living in now – before she moves – she retreats to her bedroom. But when she moves, I’m thinking there will be a treehouse that she goes to to get away.

So, since last week, my characters and my plot has changed! As a writer, you should understand that. Hazel is now 16!

Here’s my new novel cover – hope you like it!

My Answers to A Novel Idea: 7.19.14

A Novel Idea

I decided am going to have to linkup to A Novel Idea myself! So here’s my first week answers!

I am going to use my character, Hazel, today. This may change from week to week, as I’m unsure of who I’m going to want to focus on! 🙂

Hazel

  1. What’s his/her name? Are they named after someone?
Her name is Hazel Lee Collins. Her dad’s middle name is Lee.
  2. Do they have a nickname?
    Her dad calls her Hazel-girl.
  3. How old are they?
    She is 23.
  4. Hairstyle? Straight, curly, short, long, etc?
She has naturally curly hair but hates it, so she usually takes the time to straighten it because she doesn’t want to have a puffy hairstyle.
  5. Eyes? Color, size, etc?
Her eyes are green; they usually disappear when she smiles, so she considers them rather small.

Introducing A Novel Idea: A Linkup For Writers

A Novel Idea

As someone who is a writer that has spent a lot of time not writing, I find it a lot easier to write when I think about my plot line and characters in a different and interesting sort-of way. Which is why I had decided to link up to Beautiful People hosted by Notebook Sisters.

But, that didn’t help me enough. I wanted something that would get me into writing once a week. Something that would make me think about my characters and what I was writing.

Which is why I decided to start a linkup for writers called A Novel Idea. There will be 2-5 questions every week to help you work on your characters or plot and will make you think.

If nothing else, it will help ME write!

So, do you want to join? Please link up below!

We’re gonna start out easy this first week, and each Saturday the questions will get harder and harder! 🙂

  1. What’s his/her name? Are they named after someone?
  2. Do they have a nickname?
  3. How old are they?
  4. Hairstyle? Straight, curly, short, long, etc?
  5. Eyes? Color, size, etc?

That’s When I Carried You

2014-Participant-Facebook-Cover

Against my better judgement, I decided to join in on Camp NaNoWriMo this year. Again. Every year, I start writing for Camp NaNo at the last minute, have no plot planned out and fail miserably.

I did the same thing this year. In fact, I started on July 7th and had some major catching up to do. Surprisingly, I caught up within a few days and I’m back on track at this point. I luckily had been plotting out a story for months beforehand so I had an idea of what I wanted to write, just hadn’t gotten around to writing it.

So I felt like Camp was a good idea.

I’m not going to tell you a lot about my story right now – but I am going to introduce you to my two main characters that I have absolutely fallen in love with over the last few weeks of getting to know them.

Hazel and Kade are their names. I feel like I can connect with both of them in different ways, and they’re usually pretty easy to write about.

For more information on them, keep scrolling (I don’t THINK you’ll be too disappointed!)

Hazel Collins

Hazel
Hazel is a lot like me in the fact that she’s not afraid to say exactly what she’s thinking and she doesn’t like to take crap from anyone. She’s pretty easygoing and loves kids, and can’t wait to someday fall in love and start a family. Her parents recently divorced, causing her to have to choose between staying with her mother, or moving away with her dad. She chooses going with good old Daddio and they move to the place she spent her growing up years (birth-12), Pennsylvania. She is quickly reunited with people she was friends with when she was younger – including Kade Andersen.
Hazel tries to stay out of trouble but often finds herself saying and doing things that get her into scrapes. Her best friend, Manda, often instigates the troubles, too.
Hazel has a twin sister named Paige who she is very close to, but recently had some problems with, so at this point, they are kind-of in a standstill in their relationship. Neither of them want to talk about it, so they don’t.
By the end of the book, Hazel will need to let go of her hatred for her mother (for causing so many problems in her parents’ marriage) and learn to forgive her.

Kade Andersen
Kade

Meet Kade – 25 year old single guy raising his 2 younger sisters – ages 5 and 6 – and trying to scrape by on his small salary. Kade never knew his father and his mother left when she met a guy online – after having her two young daughters. Kade never heard from her again and has been raising his sisters ever since.
When his mom left, Kade turned to the worst things possible – alcohol and women – and hasn’t been able to leave that lifestyle since. After a long day at work, he goes to the bar, leaving his sister’s with their babysitter. He doesn’t know how to be a parent because his mom didn’t teach him how.
And then Hazel comes back into his life. For the first time in years, he feels like he might want to leave his lifestyle and try something different – falling for the girl he had a crush on in grade school, the girl who was his best friend and always kept him on his toes.
The thing is, Hazel hasn’t changed and she wants nothing to do with his no-good ways. Kade feels himself falling in love, but can’t seem to figure out how to step away from the life he’s been living for 7 years so that he can be good enough for Hazel.
By the end of the book, Kade will have figured out that God is the only way he can change his life around.

So, 17,000 words in and I still have a lot of work to do. 33K more to go and hopefully I’ll make myself a Camp NaNo winner. Even if I don’t, I’m proud of myself for making it this far, and getting so much writing done in such a short amount of time. Writing had gone away from me for a while – the ideas were there but the inspiration was not – and I’m just happy to be doing it again.

If you’re a fellow writer, you’ll understand that.

I’d better get back to writing!

Beautiful People: July Edition

So years ago, I had discovered Beautiful People from my friend, Kylie! I had no idea that it still existed! I love any blog means that help me get to know my characters, so I’ve decided to join back up with fellow writers and get to know my characters!

1) What’s their favourite food? (Bonus: favourite flavor of chocolate!)
Hazel really enjoys Chinese food – any kind!
Her favorite kind of chocolate is none at all. She can’t stand chocolate.
2) What do they absolutely hate?
People who try to act better than everyone else. It absolutely drives her crazy.
3) What do they enjoy learning about?
Anything! She will delve into any topic as long as she’s learning something new. She loved school for that very reason.
4) Who is the most influential person in their life?
Her dad. She’s always been close to him and he’s had a huge impact on her life. She calls him her rock and wouldn’t know what to do without him.
5) What is their childhood fear?
She hated – and still hates – snakes. If she ever sees one – rather poisonous or not – she’ll run the other way.
6) What is something they have always secretly dreamed of doing, but thought impossible?
Falling in love and having a family. She’s skeptical of it since her parents had a horrible marriage and neither of them came out happy.
7) What is something he is impractically afraid of?
Going along with the last question – marriage.
8) Are they a night owl or morning person?
Not really either – she doesn’t like to stay up late, and she also doesn’t like to get up early. But if she had to choose, she’d get up in the morning and get stuff done so she could take a nap in the middle of the afternoon.
9) Do they say everything that pops into their head, or leave a lot unsaid?
She says EXACTLY what she thinks and never lets anything go without saying, which a lot of the time gets her in trouble.
10) What are their nervous habits?
She bites her nails and cracks her knuckles – like a double whammy.

If you’re a writer and would like to link up to Beautiful People – head on over to Notebook Sisters and do so!
